World Oceans Day, an initiative by the United Nations (UN), was initially proposed during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It serves as a platform to celebrate the interconnectedness of our world’s oceans and our personal ties to the sea. Additionally, it aims to raise awareness about the pivotal role oceans play in our lives and how people can actively contribute to their protection. On 8th June 2008, the UN General Assembly officially designated this day as World Oceans Day.

The world’s oceans are the driving force behind global systems that sustain life on Earth. They regulate temperature, chemistry, currents, and support diverse marine life. Crucially, they also provide and regulate essentials like rainwater, drinking water, weather patterns, coastlines, and even the oxygen we breathe.

Culligan’s Ocean Saver Accolade initiative is in harmony with the ethos of World Oceans Day. This program acknowledges the sustainability efforts of corporate customers, such as Four Seasons Hotel Miami and Goldman Sachs, in protecting our oceans. By embracing Culligan’s plastic-free water solutions, these organisations not only reduce their environmental impact but also extend sustainability benefits to consumers.

Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine life, with approximately 8 million tons of plastic entering the ocean annually. This plastic breaks down into harmful microplastics, endangering marine ecosystems and human health. Urgent action is required to phase out single-use items and combat the alarming rates of plastic ingestion by marine mammals and fish species.

World Oceans Day serves as a crucial reminder of this pressing issue and offers individuals and businesses an opportunity to contribute to ocean preservation. By understanding how our consumer habits impact marine life, we can work towards a better future. Together with organizations like Culligan, we can champion our planet by collaborating with communities and advocating for sustainable solutions.

Let us reflect on the profound influence of the ocean on our lives and pledge to shape its future positively. We all share the responsibility of ensuring the long-term health of our oceans for the benefit of future generations, and together, we can make a lasting positive impact.
